Review: Foreo LUNA Mini

Hello guys! As this post goes up, I am probably chilling somewhere on the beautiful white sand beaches of Boracay. Ohyes. :) While I’m not a huge party person (for those who are not from the Ph, Boracay turns into party central every summer), I’m still looking forward to being with my friends. Hopefully we find some time to relax as well and maybe try out the sporty things you can do inland. I’ve already done a post about my beach essentials here before, but if you guys want to see a post about my Boracay trip in general with some beauty bits injected here and there, let me know! I’ll take photos just in case. ;) Foreo1Anyway, on to today’s review which I am really excited about! I finally get to share my thoughts on the Foreo LUNA Mini ($139.00 USD). I got this back in December of 2013 and have been using it daily ever since, so I know I can give you my fully-formed opinion based on a quarter year of usage.

So, what is this funny looking little thing, you ask? It’s essentially a cleansing device, similar to the oh-so-popular Clarisonic in that they both aim to deep cleanse skin using mechanized movements. Both are waterproof and can be used in the shower or over a sink, but the similarities pretty much end there. While the Clarisonic features a round brush head that has to be changed out every so often, the Foreo’s “brush” head is a part of the device’s body and it never has to be changed. Made out of nonporous silicone, the 1,300 nonabrasive touch-points on the LUNA Mini make for a much more gentle, sanitary experience, and you’ll never ever have to change the brush head! The Foreo also boasts “T Sonic pulsations” that supposedly allow for a more thorough deep clean. It just seemed like a greatly improved Clarisonic, so I went ahead and asked my cousin to order it for me online. Best. Decision. Ever.

Foreo2Other than the device itself, this is everything you’ll get in the box. I love the simplicity of it. There’s an authenticity card, a very short info/instructions card, and the USB charging cable. Initial charge is about two hours long and then you’ll have 300 treatments ahead of you ready for use! Perfect for people who travel for extended periods of time–no worrying about your device dying on you. I actually haven’t had to charge my Luna Mini since December (with once-a-day use). When it is low on battery, the LED light on the base of the device will emit a blinking white light.
ForeoAAs mentioned, I have the Foreo LUNA Mini. It is the smallest and most basic of three kinds of Foreos you can get, the other two being the Luna Luxe Gold ($6,500) and the Luna ($199). The LUNA and LUNA Luxe devices offer more speed settings (as opposed to just two) and are more sophisticated overall. They’re geared toward mature women and they even have an “anti-aging” mode. I picked the LUNA Mini in Cool Gray because I don’t need anti-aging modes (yet) and the touch points on this particular colour are suited for people with combination skin. I’ll explain more about that in a bit. Let’s get on to how you’re meant to use this.

ForeoBBegin by removing all of your makeup, then apply your cream cleanser of choice (this is very important–do not use cleansers with exfoliating beads or any other large bits as they can damage the silicone touch points). I use the VMV Hypoallergenics’ Hydra Balance Gentle Cream Cleanser for Combination Skin. Pick up the Foreo and:

  1. Press the center button once to turn on your LUNA mini. When activated, it will be in high-intensity Cleansing Mode.
  2. Press the center button again to put the device in low-intensity Cleansing Mode.

Using circular or up and down motions, use the silicone touch points to massage and cleanse the face. The transdermal sonic pulsations (or “T-Sonic”) help to unclog pores of dirt, oil and makeup residue, and remove dead skin cells. The use of pulsations allows for a much gentler clean as you are not physically sloughing off your skin and possibly irritating it in the process. The Foreo eases dirt and oil out from deep within the skin and I can attest to its cleansing ability. If and after using this on high-intensity mode, I feel like I just used a deep-cleaning mud mask.

The Foreo will pulse every fifteen seconds for one minute so that you know when to move on to the next section of your face. I typically work on my cheeks first, followed by my forehead and then down the rest of my T Zone using the low-intensity mode. After 1 minute, the LUNA mini’s indicator will begin to emit a steady glow and you will feel the pulsations pause 3 times in quick succession. If you’re done:

3. Press the center button once more to deactivate your LUNA mini.

Rinse your face to complete the 1-minute cleansing routine. You may opt to use the device for a little longer, but to prevent overuse, the LUNA mini will automatically switch itself off after 3 minutes.
Foreo4The two faces of the LUNA mini in Cool Gray serve different purposes. The photo on the left shows the smaller touch points, which are meant for general cleaning. At the tip on the same side, there are a small number thicker touch points used for precision cleaning. You’ll see a full face of the thicker touch points on the other face of the device, and this is the side that can be used for more intense, deep cleaning. This particular layout of touch points is well-suited for combination skin, but there are also Foreos that cater to normal, sensitive, and ultra-sensitive skin.

You can also see the center button and charging ports close to the base of the device. No need to worry about the charging port getting wet as it is waterproof. Foreo3You can use the Foreo twice a day, both morning and night, but when I was doing that my skin felt too stripped down. After a month of doing that, I cut down usage to a nightly cleanse on low-intensity mode. My skin was much happier after that, so now I only deep cleanse on high-intensity if I am feeling particularly oily.

I attribute the huge improvement to my skin’s quality (?) and general health to the Foreo LUNA mini and to the Combo-skin range of VMV Hypoallergenics products in equal parts. Cleansing the skin of all the dirt it picks up throughout the day is extremely important and the Foreo just makes it so easy for me to do that well (and quickly, too). Nourishing and moisturizing the skin are equally important, but would not be as effective if the skin was not totally clean to begin with.

Overall, this simple device is just great. I have no complaints about it whatsoever and I definitely do recommend checking it out if you were thinking of getting into the whole cleansing device thing. I’m not too sure if the LUNA Luxe devices are worth their crazy price, but the LUNA and LUNA mini are very reasonably priced. Do you absolutely need a cleansing device like the Foreo in your life? If you have good skin to begin with and you’re thorough with your cleansing routine, then no. But if you have acne problems and/or oily skin, or if you’re plain old lazy to wash your face well, then this device stands to be a great addition to your routine.

Check out the Foreo website for more information on the brand and you can refer to the online full user manual for more detailed information on usage. Also check out this video from the website which shows the device in action.
Have any of you tried the Foreo? How about the Clarisonic? Thoughts on cleansing devices in general? :)

I got mine at 30% off because there was a discount code out at the time. I’ll definitely let everyone know if another one comes out! :) But I do think it’s worth the investment. :)

  1. Have seen this on Youtube and I am curious. Ang mahal ng cleaning devices, but in the future, hope to get my hands on either this or the Clarisonic. :)

I love watching people demo using the Foreos on YouTube. I got so aliw, and that’s probably part of why I got sucked into researching it so thoroughly that I could not say no to buying it. :)) But yes, these cleansing devices are an investment and I would advise a lot of research before buying. :)

  2. Haven’t done research on any of these cleansing tools but wouldn’t it make more sense to have the bristles as they can slough off bits of dead skin? I can’t imagine how these nubs perform by way of cleaning, but I think it’s cool how it’s auto-timed.

These things must work wonders for circulation. I’m stuck on a simple cleansing sponge (most times, just bare hands) huhu.

The Foreos use “T-Sonic” pulsations which work at a frequency (not sure if correct word) that dislodges impurities in the skin. The silicone tips work together with the pulsations to massage and gently ease out the dirt and oil. It’s supposed to be better than a brush head because natural brushes can be harsh and abrasive on the skin–just as physical exfoliants are harder on skin as compared to chemical exfoliants. :) The Foreo encourages skin regeneration from deeper layers as opposed to just scraping off the top layer. I’m sorry, I don’t think I was thorough with the review now! haha will go back and edit. :)

  3. I’ve been using the Clarisonic Mia 2 for 6 months now and it has done wonders for my acne prone skin. I’ve noticed that my skin has become clearer and smoother which makes make-up application so much easier! I use the sensitive brush head and use it only once a day during my evening skin care routine. I find that using it twice a day strips my skin too just like what you experienced with the Foreo Luna. I think the only reason why they recommend twice a day usage is so that your brush head/device gets worn out faster forcing you to purchase again which translates to more sales for them! In my 6 months of usage, I’ve only had to change the brush head once just last April so technically it lasted 5 months before the bristles started getting out of shape. It doesn’t really get worn out that much since I only use it at night. I think once a day usage for cleansing devices is sufficient and more economical as well. :)

  4. I read this blog entry yesterday and now I can’t get it out of my mind. haha! I need to save save save! I need this badly. Lately I’m feeling down as my skin looks dull. My face is too oily and I feel like my cleansers are not doing the job. haaaay. For now, all I can do is sigh. haha! thanks for the great review!, :)

I was looking for opinions as to which product to buy, but reading your publication could not be more pleased, I just have a question… On the site says that lasts 10 years, yours still works well ? Thanks :)
