Rave Review: Bioderma Sèbium Pore Refiner

There are those rare times in life when you meet someone and it’s obvious from the start that you will be great friends for a very long time. It’s a magical moment coupled with a beautiful realisation, and that hasn’t happened to me in a very long time. I can count all of my best friends in the world on just one hand and most of them have been around for a while now. Recently though, I felt that little magical moment again — when I tested the Bioderma Sèbium Pore Refiner for the first time. I know, I know… that seems kind of sad, having a “moment” with a product. But really, when you have combination skin that’s pimple-prone, happiness can come in the form of finding a treatment/pore refining skincare product that works wonders. It’s the beginning of a long and beautiful relationship, I tell ya. P1150964The Bioderma Sèbium Pore Refiner (1,430.00 Php) is primarily a skincare product that refines the skin’s texture and regulates excessive sebum production, but it can also be used as a makeup primer. There is a small amount of salicylic acid included to treat existing pimples and keep them from growing into monstrosities.

What sets this apart from other pore refiners on the market is that it does not smooth out the appearance of skin by simply plugging up the pores with fillers — that’s gross on so many levels, but it’s particularly bad because it means you are blocking sebum production completely. I know we’re used to thinking of sebum as the enemy, but it’s actually just an excess of sebum that is. You kind of need that stuff to keep your skin properly moisturised, and trapping sebum in your pores is one of the many causes of acne.
P1150970The back of the box can explain what this stuff does for your skin much better than I can, so have a quick read of that. Done? Ok, here are the most important bits/parts worthy of discussion in my opinion:

  1. On top of being non-comedogenic (which is a good start for any product, though not always enough), it has other ingredients that regulate sebum production instead of completely aiming to stop it. When you as a person with oily/combo skin are able to properly regulate the oils on your face, it creates balanced skin. You never want to eliminate sebum completely because excessively dry skin can also beget pimples, believe it or not. And believe me when I say pimples on dry skin are extra painful.
  2. You don’t have to use this all over your face and you don’t even have to use it twice a day, although you could do both of those things if you think you need to. Listen to your skin and help the product do its job of regulating by picking out the areas that need it most and not over-applying.
  3. It leaves a “pleasant velvety finish.” So true and sooo nice to touch. Plus you can’t even feel the stuff sitting on the skin, which is really awesome. As I said earlier, this doubles as a makeup base and it’s that velvety finish that allows foundations to glide over the skin smoothly. It does not really extend wear time, but it doesn’t make it any shorter either. It’s more of the texture of the skin that changes when using this.

P1150972You get 30ml, which is a good amount because you don’t need to much of the stuff per use. If you use it only on your T-Zone, it should last you a very long time. The tip of the tube is pretty standard and no complaints about it because you don’t need a special applicator-type end on it anyway, as you’ll be squeezing some product out onto your fingers to apply anyway. P1150973The product itself feels like a cross between a gel and a cream. It’s very lightweight and easy to spread. Although it’s a translucent white initially, it smooths onto the skin clear. There is a slight scent to it, though I can’t put my finger on what that scent actually is. It reminds me a bit of green apple. It doesn’t linger any more than a minute though so if you don’t like it, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

P1150962For just 1,430.00 Php, this is the best pore corrector on the market. You get so much more than just instant pore correction since this is truly a skincare product and not just a makeup base/primer. If you have combination or oily skin and are prone to pimples, I encourage you to check this out at a Watson’s branch ASAP.

I don’t use this every day (lately my skincare has not been one set routine) but whenever I do, my skin looks and feels better. I usually pick it up when I feel the excess sebum weighing my skin down in the morning. As with all things in life, use common sense even when it comes to skin care. It will do you loads more than any one product can (although this one is pretty damn awesome).

Hello! I wonder if you might know which Watson’s branches already carry Bioderma? I’ve only checked at the ones in SM North and they don’t seem to have the brand yet…is it only in available in selected branches at the mo? Thank you!

  2. Hmm, it’s loaded with silicons and cyclops like any other primer. So for the most part it does the same pore-filing ‘magic’. There are a few plant extracts there, but I question their effectiveness, like I do with any other product where it’s not main ingridients. It’s great it works for you though!

Enjoying your skin care posts. (read your Alpha-H too, it’s ok, not enough local skin care bloggers).

PS. Discovered your blog from your VMV posts :)
