The sun has actually been making an appearance in London over the past few weeks (the British do have a summer – hooray!) and so my daily base routine has changed to adjust to that. If the sun is out, I am out and facing it. You can count on that. The very base of my base is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra Light Fluid (approx. £17 but always on some kind of offer). It has an SPF of 50+ and protects against UVA and UVB rays. This “ultra-light” variant works fine on my combination skin while I’m here in the UK, but the Dry Touch Gel Cream would probably be better for me back home in the Philippines. It’s important to use sunscreen throughout the year, but when summer comes around I really bring out the big guns.
Everything else that goes into my base for the summer revolves around the good old less is more philosophy.
The Vichy Dermablend Corrective Stick (shade 35) is one of the best concealers I have ever come across. It’s actually a foundation stick (and it deserves its own review) but I use it to spot conceal. On my under eyes I use my trusty K Palette Zero Kuma (Type 1) concealer. I lightly set everything using the Make Up For Ever Pro Finish Foundation and then add colour to my face using the Bobbi Brown Highlighting Powder in Bronze Glow and the Hourglass Ambient Strobe Lighting Powder in Euphoric Light. Bobbi Brown Bronze Glow doubles as my eyeshadow on lazy days (was not a lazy day in the photo above though) and to fill in my brows I use the Shu Uemura Hard 9 Pencil in Seal Brown as always. To pull everything together, I lightly contour my nose with the Happy Skin Contour Stick and apply my mascara of the moment, which is the Blinc Mascara Amplified. I don’t always have a lipstick on, but I do always use my Jack Black Lip Balm — it’s the best ever.
I know I said less is more and that certainly looks like a lot of product written down, but it doesn’t feel or look too heavy on the skin at all, swear! Anyway a good summer base is whatever the hell makes you feel comfortable in extreme heat and sweaty situations. The last thing you want to deal with on a happy summer’s day is a makeup meltdown.
