Hands are something that we immediately notice when we meet a person, and that is why our hands must be well-groomed and clean.

Of course, we already know that hygiene is very important, washing your hands with mild antibacterial soap and lukewarm water with occasional exfoliation, especially in the winter.

You should certainly not forget about the SPF factor, or good old petroleum jelly, which will nourish your skin and even your nails and protect them from the wind and cold.

For ladies, a good manicure and pedicure have been the basis of their beauty and femininity since ancient times, and this is still the case to this day.

Perhaps more than ever before, there is a variety of nail polishes – regular nail polish, quick-drying nail polish, and gel nail polish.

Every woman, regardless of which religion she belongs to, wants to look beautiful and well-groomed on every occasion.

We already know that the Islamic faith governs every segment of the believer’s life, including the area that concerns the beautification of the female and male Muslim community.

We will try to find out whether and why nail polish is Halal or Haram and whether in both cases some exceptions and rules must be strictly followed.

What is problematic regarding nail polishes and the Islamic religion is that all make-up must be waterproof and must not be permanent under any circumstances.

So, here we will try to look for the answer is nail polish allowed in Islam?

Is Nail Polish Haram or Halal In Islam?

Women have always decorated themselves in various ways to attract a potential partner or to be beautiful for their existing partner.

In the West and Europe, women even exaggerate by putting on make-up, which can sometimes even cross the line of good taste, because they no longer show their faces.

While in Muslim countries there are strict rules regarding the beautification of women, who can wear make-up and only certain make-up under certain conditions.

As for nail polish, it is a decoration that women like to wear, and in many salons, they can do various types of nail decoration and even make nail extensions over their already existing ones, which are much more durable and stronger.

In the Muslim community, nail polish is Haram for several reasons.

First, we will state that no nail polish can be removed with water, and that allows oxygen and water to reach the nails.

To remove nail polish, it is necessary to use Acetone or alcohol, which are considered harmful to the human body.

The next thing is that a woman’s skirt is always in plain sight and they don’t roll up to hide her face.

This means that if a Muslim woman wears nail polish, it will attract the attention of the environment and will intrigue the male gender as to what is still under the hijab.

During the prayer, the parts of the body to be washed, hands, face, and feet must be exposed to water and in direct contact with it.

If there is nail polish over the nails, the water will not able to come into contact with the nails, and the prayer will be considered incomplete.

Some nail polish manufacturers came up with ideas and tried to make nail polish that would allow oxygen and water to pass through to the nail, and despite their claims that they succeeded in doing so, the Muslim community is skeptical about it and the law remains the same, which is that Haram nail polish.

The Muslim community has remained strict on this issue to this day and we do not believe that will change anytime soon.

Muslim women should not be in a hurry when it comes to nail polish that has a certificate that it is Halal and you should be careful and check who is behind that certificate and how they tested it and what it contains.

Ulema is the one who should give her final opinion on this matter and until she does, Muslim women should avoid him regardless of whether he has a Halal certificate.

Because during prayer, the water simply has to reach all parts of the body, and that is impossible for now if there is light on the note, which cannot let water through and oxygen.

Because during the prayer, the water simply has to reach every part of the body because it is commanded that way and it must be strictly observed.

So, the answer to this question is wearing nail polish haram, which is maybe simpler than it seems.

Why is nail polish Haram?

Muslims all over the world have five prayers a day when they practice Wudu, that is, their ritual washing, that is, ablution.

During these religious rituals, believers are required to wash their heads, hands, feet, and parts of their faces with water, and this is simply the reason why nail polish is prohibited because it does not allow water to reach the nail, which will then not be in contact with water, and then it also means that the prayer itself, i.e. the anointing will be incomplete and will have to be repeated.

However, the beauty industry is worth billions and manufacturers will do everything to break into their market and offer their women Halal products, including nail polishes.

Therefore, halal nail polishes appear on the market, which are made of such materials that allow water to penetrate the nails.

Inglot cosmetics from Poland is one of the brands that in recent years has developed technology and offered consumers Halal products, including Halal nail polishes.

Another Halal beauty brand that comes from Canada is called Tuesday in Love.

From this company came the notification that they have created a solution that lets water through so that wudu can be completed.

This company has also passed the halal certification

More about nail polishes

The first glimmers of nail polish date back to 3000 years ago.

In almost any civilization in the world, we can find traces of some kind of nail polish usage.

Italy and Japan are seen as the two countries that used nail polishes first while in old China, people used colored varnish produced from gelatin, rubber, egg whites, and beeswax.

In China also it was used numerous mixtures as nail polishes, like for example beeswax blended with alum.

This mixture could last for several hours when painted on nails, and the color variety goes from red to pink shades.

In India, the dye was obtained from the henna plant, and those who have colored nails were seen as a higher class, but even today some parts of India use this kind of coloring of nails.

Thought history even men have dyed their nails – primarily the higher class.

Later on, this has become a lady’s thing – the craze for painting nails has taken over Europe by storm.

For example, in the 17th century France court members have worn little fingers long and they have painted them.

In England around the 19th century, it was common for people to wear long nails, in almond shape.

This is distinctive for common people.

Additionally, they have used some powder paint in pink color to paint their nails.

When we look at the then painting we can see nails that were by rule shiny and often very long.

The nails are painted with red-scented oil, then polished to a high shine. In England, somewhere in the 19th century, a certain manual that included teachings for making nail polish appeared.

Somewhere in that time, the first nail polish paste emerged on the market. Some ladies also used unstained, glossy nail polish at this time.

As years have passed, then one form of art has developed – nail art.

The first nail salons also appeared at that time, and in 1920 nail embellishment became very famous.

When the first car paint was made and this creation allowed the creation of more contemporary nail polish.

A few years later, a new method of painting nails emerged, which was an incredibly famous half-moon manicure.

And the most important event was when colored nail polish appeared on the market.

It was designed by Charles Revlon in the USA.

In 50-is nail maintenance had evolved into a very significant part of the beauty industry.

All people desired to have attractive and long nails, so anyone who didn’t have them was ready to try anything else.

Tips were originally made of elastic fabric.

For elongations, even cut nails were utilized, which were glued to the ends of the natural ones, then wrapped with bits of paper.

This was the precise moment when the modern nail industry starts to evolve.

Additional growth was defined by the innovation of fake nails in the 1950s.

Now, in modern times numerous new things are appearing in the nail industry.

In the early nineties, 3D nail polish was created in Japan, which introduced a complete revolution in the cosmetic industry.

The idea of harmonizing the color of the nails with the color of the clothes worn was started in the year 2000, and at the beginning of the 21st century, they returned to the big stage and offered shades of nail polishes, as well as French manicures.

Today, with the increasing popularization of this trend, it is important to wear as striking and impressive nail colors as possible, which can be of different forms, while numerous well-known beauties donated immensely to its popularity.

So today on the red carpet, in expansion to the cameras that take pictures of the creations that they carried, we can also see cameras that are dedicated exclusively to filming manicures, while famous beauties are contending to see which of them will have the most attractive and striking manicure.

The nail market is expanding, and making vegan-free, cruelty-free, and halal-certified nail polishes is just one way of it.

Is painting nails haram – by itself, no, but, the problem lies in the nail polish itself.

Conclusion

The Muslim community does not want to stare as far as checking halal nail polish is concerned, and the Ulema will check it, but only when the women have declared whether they want to wear it at all.

Given that it is an obstacle in the course of prayer and prevents its proper performance, the question is whether it makes sense to wear it at all.

During ablution, as we said, the water must reach all parts of the body, including the nails, otherwise, the prayer will be incomplete and incorrect and will have to be repeated.

The second thing is that the whole point is that there is Halal nail polish, when women will not be allowed to go out in public with it, but will only be able to wear it in the presence of their husbands and blood relatives who will not feel physical lust for that woman.

This is one of the reasons why Ulema has not yet taken certified Halal nail polish into consideration whether women are allowed to use it or not. And the question is when and if it will ever be approved.

All make-up that Muslim women are allowed to use must be halal and waterproof and may only be worn in front of the woman’s husband and family members who are related by blood to the woman who is putting on the makeup, so there is absolutely no point in putting on nail polish as they are those that are revealed and the nail polish would be seen which is forbidden and distasteful in the Muslim tradition and their customs.

It is far better and more correct to avoid such things and to perform the prayer correctly than to think about whether you did it correctly or not and later regret that you did not.

Nail polish leaves a thick waterproof layer of nail polish over the nail and theoretically, there is no chance of water getting to the nail, which is very important when praying.

Halal nail polishes will not allow water to pass through them to the nail, but eventually, it can pass in the form of vapor and that is something that will not be enough for anointing.
