The New Elizbeth Arden Eight Hour All-Over Miracle OIL + An Impulse Buy My Grandmother Would Be Proud of

I love, love, love the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I professed that love in a post I put up a couple of years ago and have been through several tubes of the stuff since. I was about to restock mine at Boots when I got sucked into trying out the shiny and *new* Eight Hour All-Over Miracle OIL, instead.DSC06399The oil (priced at £29.00 for 100mL) is the newest addition to the vast Eight Hour line and is a multi-purpose dry oil that you can use on your face, hair, and all over your body. As it is a dry oil, it is meant to sink in much faster than its heavier sister, the Eight Hour Cream. It smells nothing like the cream (this is slightly floral, the cream slightly medicinal — the original scent at least) and it pretty much behaves nothing like the cream. I thought I would be able to replace the cream with this, but that just isn’t the case.

I only found exactly one use for this multi-purpose oil in my life: as a hair oil. I can’t use it on my face because the scent irritates my skin and as a hand cream, it doesn’t last long. In fact, my hands felt a lot drier when I was using the oil.  Weird. Anyway, it’s saving grace is that it’s a damn good hair oil. I still need a new Eight Hour Cream though!

Right, on to more positive things!DSC06397I also got sucked into buying a new foundation that day. There was some promo that knocked £7 off any Elizabeth Arden base, so I picked out the Flawless Finish Perfectly Satin 24 Hr Foundation (£28.00), which is a medium coverage, oil-free, and low SPF base that’s great for combo-oily skin types.

Fight Of The Century FOTD

I woke up this morning with the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight on mind.

I don’t normally watch boxing — but I’m Filipino, which is an explanation for my excitement and anxiety in itself. I remember being in New York a few years ago and whenever a taxi driver and I got to talking and they found out I was Filipino, they would nearly always scream out “PACMAAAN! I love that guy!” and of course I would beam from ear to ear and agree: everyone loves Manny; he’s an incredible athlete with a tear-jerking rags to riches story behind him and he’s a fun-loving guy to boot.

Now I wouldn’t be keeping true to myself if I didn’t mention that I don’t admire Manny in all aspects. I don’t think he’s a good public servant and the company he keeps is often questionable. As an athlete, it’s undeniable that he’s brilliant. I just wish he had stuck to being a boxer and kept his hands out of politics, but not much to be done about that anymore. There were even rumours flying around that if he had won today’s fight, he would have run in the 2016 elections. Uh… if my choice is between Binay and Pacquiao in 2016, I honestly have no clue what I will do. Bury my head in the sand, perhaps.

ANYWAY. Manny lost today. And really, I was rooting for him as an athlete. Mayweather fought dirty and brought all sorts of BV to the fight, while Manny put up a good fight but fell short in terms of adapting to the situation and being aggressive. I couldn’t help but feel down after the decision was announced. Still, the whole thing was quite the spectacle and I enjoyed watching it on PPV with my family. We had white sangrias and some pica-pica during the fight, and a full lunch of paella, prawns, and grilled chicken afterwards.

I’m getting to the makeup part of this post now, don’t worry. Haha. I did try to match my look for today with the occasion, but after sitting at my vanity for a few minutes I knew I didn’t want to go too literal by wearing blue, red, and yellow (our flag colours) on my face. So I threw on a blue top instead and decided to go for a very golden look on my face (never mind the red lol) … because Manny is the golden boy of boxing and I wanted him to go for gold (even though there technically is no gold medal up for grabs–gold belt, pwede?)! Get it? Bit of a stretch? Haha! I do what I can. P1190071Keeping with my golden theme, I used my L’Oreal Lucent Magique Foundation in G7 (my summer shade) mixed with my Myra VitaGlow BB Cream* in Ivory to get a very glowy base.

Face Of The Day: Sunday Test Drive

It’s been a while since I last posted an FOTD — mostly because it’s too hot to wear much makeup and also because I still wear the same look 90% of the time — but today I actually pulled out a number new things and so I thought it was worth documenting.
P1190003It’s a still a simple look; I kept the base light but changed it up a bit with the tone of my lipstick and blush. The eye makeup isn’t even showing up here but that was crazy simple too… wearing glasses tends to make one lazy, hehe.

Shitty Makeup Day

As often as I wear makeup, some days… things just don’t go my way. Today was one of those days. P1180495

I used an old favourite tinted moisturiser for my base and found that it just didn’t work for me anymore. So pink and blotchy. On the eyes, I went too frosty and light. The mascara is also an old fave that just didn’t do it for me today. I looked sick and puffy-eyed.  The only thing that came out semi-alright were my brows, and even they could not save the look. I’m not into the lipstick I used either, but I felt that going for a more solid pink-brown might distract from the rest of the face. Not so. I eventually just let that wear off and I wore my eyeglasses in an effort to hide my face. Ick.

Crappy as I felt, I took this photo because I wanted to post it and ask you guys this: What you do when you have a shitty makeup day (and don’t have enough time to take everything off to do it over again)?

Nude, Natural—Boring?

So, after putting my “Makeup Moment” post up about loving all things nude, I had a bit of a crisis because… well, I felt boring. As many variations of “natural” makeup there are out there, they all kind of photograph the same. I know that various combinations of different tones of brown on different days makes for different looks… but do other people know that? Can they see it? Most of the time, they can’t.

In essence, I was stressing about looking the same. All. The. Time. That led to my trying out loads of more daring looks in the past three weeks or so… most of which I detested. Some were alright, but more along the lines of meh than anything close to good. They certainly didn’t make me feel good, or happy, or like I was having fun with makeup. So I gave myself a pat on the back for trying some new things out, but decided that I was happier doing whatever made me feel comfortable.

That decision doesn’t mean I won’t try new things in the future. It just means that you guys will have to deal with these nude FOTDs a while longer. Haha. I do promise to explain as best I can how each look is different though, so if you’re the type who just skims over text and lingers on photos instead, you might want to pay attention to the explanation behind the looks a bit more. Not that they’ll be long-ass—will do my best to keep it short! P1180170When confronted with the possibility of being photographed, most people stick to what they know works for them. I am like most people, so here is the bronzey-nude look I wore to an event today. What sets it apart is the sheer amount of bronzing products I used. The event called for summer attire, so I went for it with the makeup as well. These are the products I used that are normally part of my routine, but after the second photo you’ll find what I used to get my skin to look like it’s been in the sun a bit:

“The Usuals”

  • VMV Hypoallergenics Face Cover SPF 45
  • MUD Blue Corrector #2
  • K Palette Zero Kuma Concealer (Type 1) (review)
  • Myra VitaGlow BB Cream* (on the cheeks and down the bridge of my nose)
  • Ellana Minerals Finishing Powder in Espresso Con Panna**
  • Shu Uemura Hard 9 brow pencil in Seal Brown (review)
  • VMV Hypoallergenics Ooh La Lash mascara

FOTD: Shiney & Liney

I read Bea’s (The Dalaga Project) post on more “lifted” winged liner last night and felt like giving it a try today. I essentially failed, but I did draw a thicker line than usual. I also wanted to pair it with natural, dewy skin, and I do think I achieved so I figured I would just go ahead and share this. P1170880 It’s difficult to see the eyeliner head on, but there’s definitely a different overall effect. In the photo below you’ll get a better idea of the shape I ended up with, which is something I actually used to wear loads. I couldn’t resist filling in the space from the tip of the wing to the center of my lid, so I suppose the lifted wing will have to wait for another day.

I went with dewy skin because I thought it would bring a bit of freshness to the cat eye, which usually looks mod or Dita Von Teese-y. I was also just feeling good about my skin today. Haha

Random Sunday Babble (MAC Studio Fix C40 & An FOTD)

I promised myself I would post more FOTDs on my blog in 2015, so here is the very first one. It’s just a simple Sunday look, but I think I’ve mentioned in the past that on Sundays I like to work on creating a good (not necessarily perfect) base with the least amount of effort. It’s not terribly exciting, but it does force me to play around with different bases and really think about my skin.P1170529To create the base here, I whipped out my usual combination of concealers here (MUD Blue Corrector, K Palette Zero Kuma, and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage) and set everything using a large powder brush and MAC Studio Fix in C40, which is new to me. Not Studio Fix as a formula, but the shade C40.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a long time, you might remember that I once wrote about Studio Fix powder foundation and my frustration at not being able to find my perfect shade match. That post (which you can read here) is from back in 2012, but is to this day the post that receives the highest number of views on my blog. The little rant I went on about the huge shade jump from NC40 – NC42 paid off because a number of people shared helpful information that eventually led me to the shade C40.

C40 is not quite as orange as NC42 and is slightly darker than NC40, and what makes it perfect for me is the olive/yellow undertone. Today was the first time I actually tried the shade on my face and it seems to be a pretty damn good match. I still have to try it as a full coverage foundation and once I’ve done that I will talk about the shade nuances in depth.

There is going to be a lot more talk about powder foundations on this blog in the near future, I think. In 2014, I got stuck on one foundation (the Ellana Minerals Loose Powder Foundation** is that awesome) which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I do miss playing with other formulas and just knowing the differences in what other brands have to offer. Other powder foundations (pressed and loose) fell off my radar, so recently I have been exploring them again. Powders have some distinct benefits over liquid foundations, and I want to talk about those as well.

I also think that powder bases just work better with combination-oily and acne-prone skin. And speaking of skin, here’s a look at the state of my bare face at present:

Deals & Steals Alert: Laura Mercier Mini Caviar Sticks Holiday Set & VMV Christmas Promo

P1160918Can you believe it’s nearly Christmas? I’m not sure where 2014 went, but I’m quite glad to be rid of it (not such a great year for me– though I believe I said the same about 2013. Life, please give me a break). On a happier note, I am genuinely glad that Laura Mercier’s Holiday sets are finally available. They are always the best value for money in my opinion and I have never regretted picking up at least one set. This year I bought the Mini Caviar Stick Colour Collection (1,950.00 Php). 2013’s set had four mini caviar sticks, while this year’s set has six. I already own three of the shades in the set (Rosegold, Amethyst, and Moonlight) so I’m giving those away, but I am keeping these three:P1160927Copper, Khaki, and Cocoa. The mini caviar sticks come out to 325.00 Php each for 1.00g of product. That’s not bad at all considering that a full-sized caviar stick only has 1.64g of product and will set you back 1,250.00 Php. This set is such a steal, so grab it before it sells out! You can see swatches of my other caviar sticks in this post.

The new Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide Foundation is also finally available. I haven’t tested out a new base product in ages, so I’m definitely picking that up soon too.
P1160970Here’s another product I also recently picked up on offer: VMV Hypoallergenics’ Skintangible “BBBB Cream” (1,060.00 Php) I’ve used this base before and liked it well enough, but the packaging has always bothered me. It’s difficult to get the last bits of the cream out of the bottle and you end up wasting quite a bit if you don’t put in the extra effort. I paired it with VMV’s Ooh La Lash mascara to avail of the 30% discount.

I’m not too sure when the promo on makeup items ends for VMV, but their Holiday sets are also worth checking out. I know I’d love to receive their Creams de la Creme (490 Php) and My VMVery Favourite Things (1,000 Php) sets for sure. VMV is also offering their facials and skin services on a crazy discounted package until December 24. If you buy 10 facials from their Skin Services Menu, you get 70% off the total price. You can take your time using up the services as there is no expiry date either. That’s probably the sweetest deal I’ve come across this Christmas season yet.

What deals have you guys come across while Christmas shopping this year? :) Bonus FOTD after the jump!

FOTD feat. Sigma Gel Liner in Unexpected and Stila Smudge Stick in Navy

FOTD3Hi, guys! Just sharing a look I wore last week to match a dress. I don’t usually do match-matchy makeup, but sometimes I’m just in that strange sort of mood. Above is the only full-body shot I have of the dress; you can zoom in to see it up close. I wore it to my dad’s alumni homecoming night last week, where he received an award for outstanding corporate governance from his college. He went to the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, which is known for being a pioneer in agricultural studies. As you can see behind us, the magsasaka (farmer) and tamaraw stand proudly as the symbols of the school.

FOTDrOn to the look! I quite liked the mix of muted pastels with the solid navy blue panel on the dress I wore, so I worked that into the look by using a navy blue Stila Smudge Stick. On my upper lash line, I went in with a grey gel liner from Sigma (Unexpected), and the rest of my look is very soft and pastel.

Playing With Makeup (Oct. 13, 2013)

When I do my makeup, I tend to work on my skin first, followed by my eyes, then my lips, and I finish off with cheek products. I spend the most time working on my eyes, letting the eye makeup dictate or influence the rest of the look. Based on what I’ve done with my eyes, I pick a lip colour to complement the look and a blush to tie it all in. I do that for the simple reason that I like playing up my eyes the most. They’re my favourite part of my face and I have always loved a heavier eye paired with a fairly neutral or safe lip colour.

Today, I decided to change it up a bit by starting with a lipstick and letting that influence the rest of my face. I made it a point to pick a shade that I hardly ever wear, and the first lippie I puled out was MAC’s Speak Louder, which is a pink-red with subtle blue undertones. I put it on, looked at how it was working with my skin on this particular day, and decided I wasn’t into it, hehe. It happens, okay! The next lippie I pulled out was Clinique’s Chubby Stick Intense in Plushest Punch, a bold, juicy-looking raspberry pink that I really don’t use often enough. And that’s what I went with!

PWM1After finishing my base, I applied my lipstick before any eye makeup, which might be standard for some, but not me. That is always what I do (and what I recommend you do) when wearing a bright or bold lip colour, though. Seeing the shade on your lips first will help you decide what colours you’re going to use on the rest of your face to balance it out. See what look I ended up with after the jump!
