Bad Skin Days

We all have them. And I have them much too often thanks to stress from school — but hey, life goes on and the world isn’t going to stop because of your bad skin day, no matter how much you wish it would.

There are a number of different ways you can deal with bad skin days:

  1. Put some extra effort into making your hair look good (pretty hair can work wonders);
  2. Bring out the heavy-duty concealers and foundations (least recommended option);
  3. Treat the skin as best you can by using light makeup and treatment-infused products; or
  4. Don’t leave the house. Period.

I don’t stick to any one method and I have tried each at least once in my life– #2 being the most frequently resorted to, even though it is terrible for already-stressed-out skin. I like option #1 a lot because fab hair is always a mood-booster. Not leaving the house is just not an option when you have to (duh), and option #3 is the most sensible. Here’s my attempt at being kind to my skin on a bad day:

The Many Wonders of Mellaleuca Alternifolia Oil

–A.K.A. good old Tea Tree oil. Tea Tree oil is the best kind of oil you could possibly keep on your dresser/vanity. Sure olive oil is useful (removes your eye makeup, used as moisturizer) and sure Argan oil is a nice facial moisturizer because it’s easily absorbed and lightweight… but neither of those oils can do as many things as Tea Tree oil can. I suppose it’s unfair to compare oils that serve different purposes, but I’m just saying that if you had to only pick one oil to use for your beauty needs (though I can’t imagine why you would ever have to lol), make it Tea Tree.

Some will be familiar with Tea Tree oil as that ingredient in some makeup products that promises to aid in eliminating pimples. Others will also know that using pure Tea Tree oil on a blemish does the trick, too. That’s because Tea Tree oil has antimicrobial and antiseptic properties that ward off and kill bacteria. It’s nature’s natural sanitizer!

TTOI keep a bottle of pure Tea Tree oil in my bathroom at all times and I often rub a drop in between my palms before I apply foundation with my fingers. The brand of this particular 30mL bottle is JASON and I get it at Healthy Options for 995.00 Php, but you could also go for the Body Shop’s Tea Tree oil, which comes in a smaller 10mL size and sells for 395.00 Php. Both are pure Tea Tree oil anyway and the price/mL difference is minimal. I do like to get a larger bottle though, because I use it for a multitude of things!

I’m going to hand it over to Tati of GlamLifeGuru now to tell you about those many uses because she’s devoted two Tip Tuesday videos to the wonder-oil already, aside from mentioning it in other videos as well. These videos are both under two minutes but are super informative! This first one shows you how to make an acne-fighting spray that you can use on more than just your face:

Wasn’t that great? I actually use the same mixture to clean my yoga mat. ;)

Wanna hear six more ways to use Tea Tree oil! See the second video after the jump!

Healthy (Hair) Options!

Made a trip to Healthy Options (love that store!) this afternoon in search of sulfate-free shampoo. I had a Keratin treatment done on Saturday and my stylist said that I should avoid shampoos with sulfate in the ingredients list–which means avoiding almost every shampoo out there. Sulfate is an ingredient that helps remove excess oils from your hair, and there are 5 common types of sulfate used in shampoo, all varying in strength. Nothing wrong with removing oil from your hair– but having just had keratin infused into my hair, shampoos with sulfate would only take away the effects of the treatment sooner.

Nature’s Gate was the ONLY brand that explicitly said on the label: “sulfate free” so I went with it! They were 215.00php each for the shampoo and the conditioner, and though there were a lot of variants, I chose “awapuhi” because it’s supposed to add volume to your hair (also admittedly because “awapuhi” sounds fun).  Threw in some pure Tea Tree oil for when I get break-outs and some fruit leather too! The fruit leather was gone before I even got home. Yummy. :}
